Tetanus

Tetanus makes you sick when bacteria in dirt enters the body, so kids playing in the dirt are at more risk. You may have heard that you get it by stepping on a rusty nail (because there is bacteria on the nail). Other examples include wounds contaminated with dirt, burns, or animal bites. Tetanus can cause painful muscle contractions.

Symptoms
  • Jaw cramping/clenching
  • Sudden muscle spasms (often in the stomach)
  • Painfully stiff muscles all over the body
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Seizures
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Excessive sweating
  • Changes in blood pressure and heart rate
